What does the word "Quality" means to you?

What does "Quality" represent?

Think about it. Is there one simple definition or is it a case of knowing what quality is when you see it?

The American Society for Quality Control defines quality as a subjective term for which each person ha his or her own definition. In technical usage, quality can have two meanings: 1) the characteristics of a product or service that bear on its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs &  2) a product or service free of deficiencies.

Quality can take many forms including quality of design, quality of conformance, & quality of performance. Quality of design means that the product has been designed to successfully fill a consumer need, real or perceived. While the flat swing seat seen in the opening cartoon is not precisely the rope-and-tire combination the customer wanted, it is a quality design because it will allow the customer to swing. Quality of conformance –conformance to requirements – refers to the manufacture of the product or the provision of the service that meets the specific requirements set by the consumer. From this viewpoint, only a tire-and-rope swing will meet the customer^'s requirements, Quality of performance means that product or service performs its intended function as identified by the consumer. If the customer performance requirements stated the desire to swing, with no specific type of swing mentioned, then either the simple tire-and-rope design or a flat swing performs the function desired by the user.

Armand Feigenbaum, author of Total Quality Control, states that quality is a customer determination which is based on the customer`s actual experience with the product or service, measured against his or her requirements – stated or unstated, conscious or merely sensed, technically in a competitive market.
